Chapter 9
Barbara pulled into a parking space outside Millie’s diner and pulled out her phone. She took the bill out of her purse and punched in the number for the electric company.
“I would like to pay the bill for Ann Carter,” Barbara told the electric company representative. After giving her the credit card number and verifying Ann’s electricity would be back on within an hour, she exited her car just as Grant pulled into the parking lot.
“Sorry I’m late,” he said. “I had a message from the office, and I had to call them back. Are you ready?”
“Yes, I am starving.”
Grant opened the door and followed Barbara into the quiet restaurant. Grant looked around the almost empty room. “Are you sure this is a good place to eat?”
Barbara smiled. “Trust me,” she said. “They have the best hoagies in town. It’s a hidden gem. I like it like this, after the lunch crowd has gone.”
They walked to the counter and ordered their sandwiches. The cashier handed them their drinks, water for Barbara and a ginger ale for Grant. They walked to a booth and sat.
“How did you find out about this place?”
“One of my ex-husband’s patients told me about it years ago. I have been coming here ever since.”
“Do you see him a lot?”
“Who?”
“Your ex-husband.”
“No. I hardly see him at all. Last week was a rare occurrence. Besides, he has a taste for younger flesh. His last girlfriend was younger than our son.”
“Is that why you divorced?”
“He made the decision. Then he tried to bankrupt me; although, I don’t think it was him; it was her. She wanted all the money and tried to keep it from me. I worked many years building that practice and I was going to get what I deserved.”
Grant eyed Barbara suspiciously. The cashier set their sandwiches in front of them and walked away.
“What did you get?” Grant asked, then took a bite out of his sandwich.
“How did we get on this subject? I don’t want to talk about him. It has been a fantastic day. Did you like volunteering at the kitchen?”
“I enjoyed it. I’ll definitely do it again. Just let me know when you need my help.”
“We always need help. You made quite an impression today.”
“Some of the patrons are very colorful.”
“That’s a nice way of putting it.” The sauce from Barbara’s sandwich oozed onto her fingers and she promptly licked it off. Grant watched closely. His lips curved into a wide smile. “What are you smiling about?” Barbara asked.
“You are right. This is one good sandwich,” he said slyly. “How long have you been working there?”
“A few years.”
“You do it every day?”
“Only on Mondays. I might add another day if they really need me. Otherwise, on Tuesdays I cut coupons with the Bees. On Wednesdays we go shopping for the pantry and the rest of the week I take care of me. I might go to the spa or to a movie or I give my place a deep cleaning.”
“Are you going to see a movie this week?”
“I could.
